Madam, – In reply to Brendan Lynch’s letter (April 1st) demonising the men of 1916, I would like to point out that it was thanks to the men and women who fought in the period 1916-1922 that we have our independence. Despite the disgraceful efforts of many to demonise these people, they succeeded against all the odds where generations of “constitutional” politicians failed.

We have independence as of right as a nation, not thanks to acts of parliament in London, and if that right needs to vindicated by war then so be it. I believe we should celebrate 1916 with gusto as an example of bravery, selflessness and patriotism. Characteristics badly needed in the Ireland of today. – Yours, etc,

PAUL WILLIAMS,
