A chara, – Brian O’Connor’s article vilifying the GAA (Tipping Point, Sport, June 13th) fails in its purpose to illuminate the so-called “little Irelander” mentality of the GAA. Whilst attempting to portray the GAA mindset as “inward-looking” and narrow minded, in fact, it’s O’Connor who emerges as the one with a chip on his shoulder. Why does this fine reporter feel the need to mock GAA members in the northern part of our island? Perhaps Mickey Harte and co were over-zealous in defence of a friend, but to lash out at Harte, a man that epitomises all that is good in Irish sport, is baffling.

Mr O'Connor's enthusiasm for horse racing and his disdain for the culture of the GAA is striking and reminds me of George Orwell's Animal Farm: "Four legs good; two legs bad!" Why the long face, Brian? – Is mise,
