Litter in our countryside

Sir, – As a cyclist who regularly trundles around the Wicklow and Dublin mountains, it is very disheartening to see the amount of rubbish deposited on our roads by a minority of individuals. Sadly, the levels of rubbish tend to rise in the very places where tourists and locals stop to take in the lovely views.

I would guess that very few people have been prosecuted for such ignorance and that those who were have never get more than a slap on the wrist. To improve matters why not impose substantial fines on the offenders, with a choice to work a significant number of hours cleaning up such rubbish as an alternative to a fine? – Yours, etc,

BRIAN CULLEN,

Dublin 16.
