Sir, - May I remind Mr Jacobson (October 26th) that there are two sides to many post boxes in Dublin. He chooses to speak about the one with the British symbol. But the side which irritates me most of all is the side with the new, ugly carbuncle foisted on its back.

This "extension" bears no relation, in design, to the original pillar and serves to vandalise it, in my view. Often it takes up too much space, i.e. Stoneybatter, and obstructs pedestrians. Yet there are two of these against the railings outside Green's Bookshop, Clare Street, which are functional, unobtrusive and compatible with each other.

As for defacing or pulling down the remnants of British occupation, I am not in favour of, destroying Dublin Castle or the House of Parliament (Bank of Ireland, College Green). I see these as monuments to skilled designers and craftsmen, which must be preserved.

Ownership of one's spirit is what matters. Remember Brian Keenan! - Yours, etc.,
