A chara, - I wish to protest at the continued detention of the Mayo landowners, whose crime is to object to the demarcation of gas pipes through their land and the pumping of highly pressurised unrefined gas through a boggy terrain, which could have fatal consequences.

In Nigeria objectors attempting to oppose the plans of Shell have paid for it with their lives; here in Ireland our judicial system ensures that such dangerous criminals go to prison indefinitely.

Would the Government have us believe that it may refuse Shell permission to proceed with its high-risk cost-saving plans, having allowed the giant multinational to build its inland refinery and to mark out pipelines? Where is the logic in this? - Beir beannacht,
