Israel’s nation-state law

Sir, – So Israel has passed a law declaring itself the nation-state of the Jewish people.

Well, as an Irish Jew (and therefore a member of the said Jewish people), I have to ask myself what that might mean.

Will it mean equal respect for Israel’s non-Jewish minorities? I fear not.

Will it even mean equal respect for its secular-minded and non-orthodox Jewish citizens? Not on the evidence so far.

Well then, it also can’t respect the majority of Jews outside Israel, who are themselves secular and non-orthodox.

Yet Israel claims to speak for Jews everywhere.

It’s all very puzzling. But whatever it means, it doesn’t speak for me. – Yours, etc,
