Madam, - I agree with Michael Boyle (June 2nd). We should spend the money on the railways. Why not reopen the existing railway line from Navan to Drogheda and introduce a shuttle service to link up with commuter services from Drogheda to Dublin? - Yours, etc,

KIERAN COMERFORD, Charleville Close, Rathmines, Dublin 6.

Madam, - In response to Michael Boyle's scepticism about the need for the M3, the Ashbourne bypass does not specifically serve people travelling into the west of Dublin (Blanchardstown, etc) from Navan and beyond, who currently face endless tailbacks, in what must be an insufferable journey on the single-lane N3, before reaching the dual-carriageway and gridlock of the three Blanchardstown roundabouts. Any "right-minded motorist" would surely pay a €2.50 toll rather than add an east-west excursion, via Kentstown, to their north-south marathon, which is one "solution" suggested by Mr Boyle (using the N2).

Mr Boyle's other "solution", of using the money to electrify the railways "of Dublin and beyond", would benefit everyone except the above people - who unfortunately do not have a railway to electrify! - Yours, etc,
