Ireland Of The Welcomes

Sir, - Kevin Myers complains at being asked for £6.50 for a bottle of Jacob's Creek wine in a Connemara supermarket (An Irishman's Diary, September 17th). He should think himself lucky. On my first visit to Ireland 10 years ago that was the going rate for a bottle of Blue Nun and the notion that something drinkable should be on offer, at any price, was laughable.

Mr Myers may be right to bemoan many of the changes in Irish life, but the ready and widespread availability of good wine is something to be celebrated. - Yours, etc.,
