Madam, - I refer to the letter from Ms E Sheil (August 15th) about the clamping of a car owned by French tourists in a Galway city car park because of expired meter time. I saw a similar incident in Dublin, also involving a car owned by French tourists.

It is exceptional to clamp cars because of expired time on meters or parking tickets; it does not happen anywhere else in Europe. In the absence of warning signs to the effect that cars will be clamped for such minor offences, it should be illegal to clamp cars because of expired parking ticket or meter time.

Motoring organisations should be more vociferous on this issue. - Yours, etc,
