INTOLERABLE TOWERS

Sir, - At the moment, Sligo County Council has applications for 11 steel towers for communications. Of these, three are on top or very close to the sites of megalithic or hill fort remains. Whatever the pressures, it is intolerable that such places be violated with massive erect ions that ruin the view for many miles during the day and flash red lights all night.

As a society, we must see that such places are vastly important both from tourism and cultural reasons. Mullaghfarna, for instance, standing slightly apart from the other megalithic remains of the Creevykeel graves area, is a magical place of wild flowers, kestrels and larks, unidentified stone circles and a passage grave that may be well over 6,000 years old. Can we not see that the siting of steel towers in a place like this vandalism; materialism gone mad? Places like Knocknarea and Mullaghfarna are of great interest to peoples of other nations; why not to us? - Yours, etc.,

Strandhill,

Co Sligo.
