Sir, – Nurit Tinari-Modai, Deputy Ambassador of Israel (December 8th), complains that the Palestinian Authority refuses to acknowledge the largesse extended to it by Israel. Perhaps the recent killing of 160 Palestinians (including women and children) by the Israeli military might have had an influence on this “bizarre” behaviour. – Yours, etc,
Sir, – Brian Ó Bróin (December 8th) uses the “Bundoran corridor” (my term) to imply that Israel should not feel vulnerable regarding its own “narrow waist” around Herzliya and Tel Aviv.
The comparison would indeed be an apt one if the authorities in Northern Ireland were as resolutely hostile toward the existence of the Republic of Ireland as the Palestinian Authority is towards Israel and if – as in Israel – the Republic’s commercial and economic hub were in the Ballyshannon and Bundoran area. But since neither of these cases apply, the analogy is of questionable value. – Yours, etc,
