Honest discussion on nuclear energy

Sir, – We need to have an honest debate about nuclear energy. Once again we have Irish hypocrisy at play. It was stated in the Dáil recently that “nuclear-powered electricity generation plants are prohibited in Ireland and the Government has no plans to revisit the prohibition on nuclear-powered electricity generation in Ireland”.

Ireland is connected to the UK grid. Over 20 per cent of electricity generated in the UK is provided by nuclear energy.

With much fanfare the Government recently announced the proposal to construct an inter-connector with the French grid known as the Celtic Connector. At least 70 per cent of electricity generated in France is provided by nuclear energy.

Sir, – It is claimed that the problem of radioactive waste has been solved, but there exists not one long-term storage facility for high-level radioactive waste.
