Higgs boson captured

Sir, – The long-awaited identification of the Higgs boson as the basic unit of mass, or weight, provides an elegant illustration of the symmetry of physics. Having known for years how hard it is to lose weight, it’s reassuring to see that it is similarly tricky to find it. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Sure they’re only starting. Now they have to find the able seaman, third mate and the captain! – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I found Dick Ahlstrom’s explanation of the Higgs boson (Hone News, July 5th) easier to understand than the account given by Bob Diamond to the House of Commons treasury committee concerning the way in which interest rates are calculated to establish the London InterBank Offered Rate. I could go on, but I don’t want to libor the point. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Just this afternoon, while perusing the shelves in a Dublin 6 food store, I observed a man using a small, coloured crystal on a chain to help him select suitable foods. He did this by dangling the crystal over a selected packet, and the crystal would then answer yes our no by swinging either to and fro or left to right. This process was tried on a large number of items before a not particularly healthy option was chosen.

This all happened on the same day that scientists at Cern announced probably the most significant scientific discovery of our generation, with the near confirmation of the existence of the Higgs particle.

The mind boggles! – Yours, etc,
