Hailing 'freedom fighter' Ganley

Madam, - The Washington-based neo-conservative Heritage Foundation recently hosted a visit and address by Mr Declan Ganley. The invitation to the Foundation's members and backers remarkably described the mastermind of Libertas as "a freedom fighter". The honorary patron of the Heritage Foundation is none other than Baroness Margaret Thatcher who infamously stigmatised Nelson Mandela as "a terrorist".

The Heritage website regularly asks "what would Ronald Reagan do?" about this or that current issue. Linking Thatcher and Reagan with the concept of a "freedom fighter" brings to mind troubling images of the Contras in Central America and the CIA-backed mujahadeen in Afghanistan. And, to borrow Lady Bracknell's insight, it is to be presumed that we know what those unfortunate movements led to. - Yours, etc,
