Sir, - Referring to the letter of the Turkish Ambassador published in The Irish Times on December 31st I would like to point out that Greece is in favour of the European orientation of Turkey, but her European itinerary is linked with certain behaviour. To abandon aggressive schemes, facilitate a solution of the Cyprus problem improve relations with her neighbouring countries and particularly with Greece, respect human rights and cease state terrorism particularly against the Kurds.
As regards our relations with the Balkan neighbours, Greece is a decisive factor of peace, stability, security and co operation in the troubled area of the Balkans. She has positively contributed to end the tragic ethnic conflicts by taking a number of diplomatic initiatives and providing humanitarian aid to all parties. It enjoys very good relations with all Balkan countries and her membership of EU is being a vital link of these countries to Europe, a role recognised by all parties in the area. - Yours, etc.,
