Sir, - Una O'Brien (November 28th) seems to worry that the "chattering classes" aren't particularly worried about inequality in golf clubs, compared with that represented by Rule 21. I hope she is right.

Rule 21 was a national rule, agreed by the majority and abolished by the majority when circumstances had changed. Inequality in golf clubs is a local matter. If Ms O'Brien feels she is treated unfairly in her golf club, it is her neighbours who are treating her so, not the "new pluralists" in Hollywood and Foxrock. As the problem is in her own back garden, I suggest the solution is also.

Personally though, I wouldn't mind practicing my backswing in the hallowed halls of the Law Library. - Yours, etc.,
