Madam, – President Reagan, when asked, “How could an actor become president?”, once replied “how can a president not be an actor“? We may well ask ourselves, how can the minister for finance not be the nation’s foremost economic analyst? Yours, etc,

Madam, – In her article today (Opinion, May 7th) Sarah Carey, said of George Lee, “Was he finally exposing himself as a Blueshirt Sleeper in Montrose? Had he spent the last 17 years plugging away in RTÉ with the sole purpose of undermining Fianna Fáil so that he could launch a career in politics when the time was right?” Using a term like Blueshirt in the current political debate is to say the least anachronistic. We do not hear of comments from journalists about the Broy Harriers when Brian Cowen uses a bullying demeanour to address us “the peasants”.

It really is about time that the media in general stopped using the term Blueshirt as a form of insult and moved on from the Civil War. It has become a lazy catch-all phrase when Fine Gael is under discussion.

Regarding George Lee, he has a strength of character that has enabled him to move from the sidelines and onto the political stage and participate. We can all talk the talk from the sidelines, but it takes a rare courage and passion to step forward and walk the walk.

Furthermore, to “accuse him” of almost secretly harbouring Fine Gael tendencies while working for RTÉ is a joke. Listen any day to RTÉ and hear the open trumpeting of Fianna Fáil in all its various open and subtle forms. – Yours, etc,
