Gathering . . . the litter

Sir, – I recently took a weekend away with our family to visit Galway. As we headed down the M2 onto the M50 and westbound onto the M4, there was great excitement in the car for our rare family break.

My mood soon cooled as I noticed the litter streamed along the roadside of the M2, M50 and the outbound area of the M4. My mind was brought back to the days in May 2011 when the M50 was lined with individuals cleaning the litter in anticipation of Queen Elizabeth’s visit and the visit of Barack Obama. There was much excitement to welcome the two guests and showcase Ireland as a beautiful country to visit and to invest in.

Now in the year of The Gathering this great effort is forgotten. It is so disappointing to see the litter strewn along the motorways. Was the great effort in 2011 a false one? Why present Ireland as a beautiful country if we are not willing to sustain the effort? We can all do something to make Ireland beautiful. I’ll help! Let’s keep Ireland beautiful. – Yours, etc,

SEAN SMITH,
