Sir, - The recently announced 11 Fulbright scholarships mark a significant and welcome change in attitudes to disability in the higher echelons of Irish society. Two of the five nominated disciplines for these prestigious scholarships are devoted in some way to disability, and I hope that at least one of them is earmarked specifically for a person with a disability. Since there has been a steady increase in the numbers of students with disabilities attending higher education in Ireland, there should be no shortage of suitable applicants. Other scholarship schemes - government and non-government - should follow the Fulbright lead and break some of the prejudices and barriers that disabled people face in Irish society. - Yours, etc., Patricia Callaghan,
