Sir, It is regrettable that in mentioning some of the people who played a role in the founding of our State (April 30th) neither the Taoiseach nor the leader of the Fianna Fail mentioned the man who, in taking up the role of first leader of the Opposition in the Dail, truly played a key part.
Tom Johnson was a great national servant, who in addition to serving as leader of the Opposition was also the first leader of the Parliamentary Labour Party author of the Democratic Programme of the first Dail, Senator and member of the Labour Court.
The fourth Tom Johnson Summer School, founded to honour his memory, will take place this year in Dun more East, Co Waterford, from July 11th-13th. The theme "Bunreacht na hEireann at Sixty - Time for Change?", will allow plenty of scope for debate. Further details available from the undersigned. - Yours, etc.,
Director,
The Labour Party,
Ely Place,
Dublin 2.
