Festival of choral music

Madam, - I would like to make an especial appeal to those who enjoy live choral music

Madam, - I would like to make an especial appeal to those who enjoy live choral music. For the last 50 years we have had a gem of a festival under our noses, in my opinion disgracefully under-reported in the national media - the Cork International Choral Festival. Whereas small poetry readings, obscure film shows, certain opera and chamber music festivals seem to be fashionable and have vociferous support, this festival, which attracts five thousand competitors (and their groupies) is almost unknown to the public.

This is its 50th anniversary. It's not chic - if you want to be seen, don't bother - but if you enjoy glorious choral music at its best and particularly if you have never heard choral music, come to Cork on the May bank holiday weekend. There are some smashing choirs on show. I guarantee at least once, the hairs will stand on the back of your neck.

Now, where's my groupie gone? - Yours, etc.,

LIAM J. McMULLIN, Manor Court, Knocknacarra, Galway.
