Madam, – I read with great interest the comments of David McGee, retail director of Pricewaterhouse Coopers, concerning the collective guilt of Irish consumers about their consumption habits during the boom (“Our shopping habits ‘never to recover from guilt over boom’”, January 19th).

May I ask whether the same guilt applies to those in the retail and service sectors (including the large accountancy firms) who gilded the lily during the boom years by raising their prices to unsustainable levels and thus contributed to this irrational exuberance? – Yours, etc,
