A chara, - Barry Thornton (February 3rd) refers to Government silence on the differences between farmers and hill-walkers in relation to access to the countryside.
As Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, I have established Comhairle na Tuaithe following a consultation process involving the farming organisations, tourism marketing bodies and recreational users of the countryside.
The aims of this body will be to ensure that all those with an interest in and concern for the sustainable development and proper management of the recreational amenities of the countryside are fully consulted on their future management. This body will also aim to work on resolving conflicts that arise in relation to access issues and responsible enjoyment of the countryside.
I feel the new body will play an important role in bringing about a community-based solution to this issue. - Is mise,
ÉAMON Ó CUÍV, TD, Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Mespil Road, Dublin 4.
