Donald Trump and stoking conflict

Sir, – Suzanne Lynch, remarking on "Trump's explosive intervention" in the debate about NFL players' peaceful protests, concludes that the "the president once again showed his talent for stoking conflict" ("Trump tackles yet another US institution with NFL outbursts", September 30th). Whether commenting on allies, enemies or athletes, he does always seem to have an angry opinion ready. Tweets indignantly channel narrow, nationalistic prejudices and avoid showing an appreciation for the wider issues. He doesn't read, claiming he doesn't have the time. Perhaps he also senses that cultivating a deeper understanding of the science of government would diminish his appeal. He needs to steer clear of reading to maintain his rage. In the world of populist politics, too many books spoil the wrath. – Yours, etc,
