Do we need a citizens’ assembly?

Sir, – I fail to see the purpose of the so-called citizens’ assembly which has been established to examine the Eighth Amendment.

A few months ago the citizens of this Republic voted in a general election. Surely the parliament which we freely elected is a citizens’ assembly?

Is this not another example of “an Irish solution to an Irish problem”? No, the can is once more being kicked down the road.

Dealing with the Eighth Amendment ever since we walked into that moral and political quagmire in 1983 is the equivalent of wrestling with an octopus. – Yours, etc,

Fr IGGY O’DONOVAN,

O’Connell St,

Limerick.
