Sir, - I too was one of those '`going to write" to support and congratulate Kevin Myers on his defence of Nora Wall. Belatedly I do so now. What Mr Myers wrote was a courageous contribution and, let us at least hope, a turning point in present-day journalism. In one short article he highlighted the ocean of craven political correctness and witch-hunting fervour by society in general and by the media in particular, by which so many today allow their life values to be set. The reality of this outrageous and unjust trial, and its treatment by the press and TV, should shame the whole nation.
The Irish Times too cannot escape criticism for its printing of various uncorroborated "colour" pieces. Must it be left entirely to Kevin Myers to express a more balanced view of such events and times?
It hardly needs saying that no decade, period, or time is perfect, and certainly the decades around the 1950s were far from idyllic. However, I shudder to think what future generations will say of our present society and times and its dominance by a rampant and largely manipulative media. - Yours, etc., Neil Sharkey,
