Sir, - As we all know, many terrible road accidents are caused by reckless overtaking, which is often due to frustration and anger arising from slow drivers who are either selfish or not alert.

For very many years some American states have had laws which eliminate much of this frustration.

On minor roads with only one lane in each direction a driver who has five or more vehicles directly behind him must pull in at the first opportunity and let them pass.

On multi-lane highways overtaking is permitted on the inside of the slower vehicle. If it happens repeatedly, the driver of the slower vehicle is fined for blocking the fast lane.

And, yes, there are countless highway patrolmen to enforce these laws.
