Sir, - Like many others on our Island I am shocked by the wave of deaths on our roads. As a driver I have become more aware and probably more alert.

Over the past few days while driving to and from work, I have noticed four bus drivers talking on mobile phones while driving their buses and countless drivers of large articulated lorries driving with their left hand on the steering wheel, while holding their right elbow to the wheel and their phone to their ears. I've also noticed many taxi/hackney drivers using mobile phones while carrying passengers.

Last night I was at the junction of Clonshaugh Road and Oscar Traynor Road waiting to make a right turn with the onward traffic coming from the Clonshaugh Industrial estate. In the line of traffice to my right there were approximately eight people trying to move in the traffic while talking on their mobile phones.

I am quite sure that it is not only speeding and drunk driving that causes road deaths. Surely people should be banned from using mobile phones especially when in control of public service vehicles or articulated lorries - to start with. - Yours, etc.,
