A Chara - I am appalled that, in spite of the recent intensification of the carnage on our roads, the tenor of several recent letters is to deflect criticism from the perpetrators - motorists. It is not the weather, potholes, local authorities, police, car manufacturers, legislation, pedestrians or cyclists, but motorists, that propel tonnes of steel at speeds in excess of their ability to control them if something unexpected happens.

Improved legislation and police enforcement, as well as introduction of automatic detection equipment can help; but the greatest incentive to drive safely would be a metal spike pointing from the steering wheel to the heart of the driver. - Is mise, Joe Lalor,
