Data protection and electoral registers

Sir, – The Data Protection Commissioner has to enforce data protection law as it is, not as genealogical researchers would like it to be. Contrary to the apparent belief of some (August 18th), one's privacy rights do not lapse when one reaches retirement age. The comment that current electoral registers are available online is disingenuous. Voters' entries on the register can only be retrieved if one already knows their full names and the streets or townlands where they live. – Yours, etc,

FINTAN SWANTON,

Westport, Co Mayo.
