Sir, – One can cycle the length and breath of Switzerland on special lanes without having to encounter a single mechanically propelled vehicle. Unfortunately this country does not have such a network of paths, but it has a few cycling beauties in remote parts of the island such as the Great Western Greenway. The problem is how to transport the bike to such locations without having to use the car. The CIÉ transport companies are hopeless and when it does carry a bike, Irish Rail charges a fortune.

By way of contrast, in Chicago outside of rush hour, trains carry bikes free of charge and all local buses have a rack attached to the front on which bikes are again carried for free. – Yours, etc,
