Madam, – Minister for the Environment John Gormley did not mention in his announcement on litter on beaches (“Job ban may be lifted to aid clean-up of beaches”, June 4th) the need for people to take responsibility for their own litter and bring same home with them.
Why should general taxpayers have to pay the cost of actions by these dirty, irresponsible people?
There is a primary school here in Galway where it is school policy that pupils must take home their own lunch wrappers, etc. This is a fantastic way to educate young children and make them aware that they are responsible for their own rubbish.
I’m afraid the dirty Irish have earned their reputation. Just look at the streets and countryside. If we educate the young people maybe there is hope! – Yours, etc,
