Sir, - Tricia Balfe (co-ordinator, Cork Women's Political Association) talks about women "who aspire to give women the choice of independence from men." As most women in Ireland are married, I do not think that this sort of talk is very helpful in promoting family life.

Husband, wife and children depend on each other within the family unit and are therefore interdependent. The husband and wife contribute, whether it is at an economic level or a human level, to the common good of the family. This does not mean that married women, whether working in or out of the home, lose their identity or independence as human beings.

The choice of economic independence, however, within marriage is contrary to its very meaning and can only lead to a lack of harmony within the home. Any woman who wants the choice of independence from men should not get married. Ditto for men. - Yours, etc.,
