Sir, - We continue to read of convictions sometimes running into double figures, of juveniles for crimes with violence, suggesting that present measures such as confinement in places of correction, often overcrowded, are insufficient.
Is there not a case for a return to caning? Say a few strokes with a light cane. The prospect of pain may well be a stronger deterrent, particularly for those who have already experienced it, than the prospect of another period in what may well be a better place than their own home, or not at all.
The type of cane would need to be standardised, and an age limit set, and be for males only. Medical certification of fitness might be necessary, and an authorised witness present. Let's have comment on this suggestion. - Yours, etc.,
