Beit paintings and Russborough House

Sir, – As the Trinity College Dublin nominee on the Alfred Beit Foundation, I wish to respond to "Russborough to sell Old Masters to fund upkeep of house" (May 12th). The article reports that "The board of the foundation 'unanimously approved' the painful but necessary decision to sell the paintings at a meeting earlier this year." Unfortunately, I was not present at the meeting on March 5th where this "unanimous" decision was taken. While acknowledging the very challenging financial climate that Russborough is operating under, as Trinity's nominee I have consistently maintained the position that the sale of paintings is not acceptable. My strong and unwavering opposition to the sale of any assets at Russborough is on the record during the last two years. – Yours, etc,
