Sir, - David McCoy asks (February 8th) if Ruth Dudley Edwards believes "it is acceptable for the British government to represent unionism and not acceptable for the Irish Government to represent nationalism and republicanism".

Well, if the great day ever dawns when we have a united Ireland, I would have thought it essential for our Government to represent the Unionist tradition, as well as nationalism and republicanism. Perhaps it would be a good idea if the present Government and, indeed, the people of the Republic, started the painful process of preparation right now. - Yours, etc.,
