Madam, – According to publicly available information, the planned project in Cork city called “the Brewery Quarter” is to feature a mix of shops, bars, restaurants, an eight-screen cinema, exhibition areas, 46 student apartments and a viewing tower, as well as an event centre (Home News, June 8th).
Ironically, there seems to be no mention of a functioning “brewery” or microbrewery in the plan; the addition of yet more bars really doesn’t do justice to the centuries of brewing history on that site.
If this planned redevelopment is to truly honour the centuries of brewing tradition and be true to the title of “the Brewery Quarter”, then a functional brewery should be incorporated into the plan, with a retail outlet and perhaps associated with one of the restaurants.
Otherwise, down the road I foresee there will be many disappointed visiting beer connoisseurs misguided by “the Brewery Quarter”; as a beer connoisseur, I know I would be. – Yours, etc,
