A chara, – I bow to Walter Lacey’s long experience as a councillor (“Time for a merger of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael?”, Letters, September 7th).
Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have quite successfully managed a coalition, which many doubted a few short years ago could happen. Politically, they are not very different parties, albeit with an antagonistic history.
A merger into one party would bring far more problems than benefits. Both parties benefit from the illusion that they are different animals; they are both right-of-centre outfits, with similar aims, a vested interest in protecting the political status quo and purporting (at election time) to be different.
And just think what a stampede for jobs and positions there would be, if there ever were to be a merger. – Is mise,
