Sir, – Jen Hogan suggests our teens are missing out on not being given the opportunity to work by employers, but surely the elephant in the room is why these children are off for an insanely long three months of summer (“It’s hard not to feel sorry for teenagers these days”, August 6th).
This is a throwback to the farming culture of old, when the teens were indeed needed to work the land. Nowadays, as Jen notes, no work is being done by them. Surely the common sense thing to do is extend the school year by at least two-three weeks? – Yours, etc,
