Sir, – Further to the passing of Imogen Stuart (”Prolific Irish-German sculptor Imogen Stuart dies aged 96″, (News, March 26th), those lucky enough to live in the proximity of St Mel’s Cathedral in Longford will be aware of her artistic contribution to the restored cathedral after the catastrophic fire in 2009 which saw the cathedral razed to the ground. At the centre of the restored cathedral, the beautiful silver tabernacle, the lectern, and the sanctuary cross are all designed by Imogen Stuart. The cathedral showcases the art and fine workmanship of at least a dozen artists and is openly accessible to people of all faiths and none to come, view and enjoy. Surely the greatest legacy of any artist must be to live on in the minds and hearts of the viewer. – Yours, etc,
SHEELAGH MOONEY,
Ardagh,
Co Longford.
