Energy prices and the consumer

Paying almost twice the EU average

Sir, – I note that Irish consumers were paying “42.75 cent a KWh for electricity in December, almost twice the EU average” (Business, January 11th). This is despite wholesale prices trading close to 10cent KWh for the past three to four months and a significant increase in the proportion of renewable energy across the grid.

What I would like to know is what all our regulators and commissioners for energy, trade, competition and who knows what are doing to protect the Irish consumers and businesses from these extraordinarily high prices long after any justification for them has well and truly passed. – Yours, etc,

TOM GILLETT,

Dublin 18.
