Flags And Emblems

Sir, - Every time there is a debate about national emblems, the "St Patrick's Cross" idea is wheeled out again. What a pity it can't be laid to rest once and for all.

Arthur Allshire (June 10th), writes: "What harm would there be if the flag of St Patrick was used on public buildings in the North - especially as this flag was born aeons before there ever was a border." Except that it wasn't. It was invented by Dublin Castle in the 17th century as a counterpart of St George's Cross. It was never used as a flag (except briefly by the Blueshirts), and has nothing whatever to do with St Patrick. - Yours, etc.,
