Actress Zsa Zsa Gabor was in a coma today after her car struck a street lamp in Los Angeles.

The 85-year-old was taken by helicopter to Cedars-Sinai hospital after yesterday's accident,

"Apparently a light pole was knocked down and her injuries were sufficient that she was transported ... and remains hospitalised," said Sergeant Bruce Thomas of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department.

Mr Gerd Birkmann, a spokesman for Gabor's husband, Frederic von Anhalt, said the actress was on a respirator. She said von Anhalt told him that she fell into a coma after the accident.

Gabor's daughter, Ms Francesca Hilton, refused to comment. The Hungarian-born actress is most famous for her multiple marriages - at least eight. In 1989, Gabor was sentenced to 72 hours in jail for slapping a Beverly Hills policeman. She also was ordered to perform 120 hours of community service at a women's shelter.
