Edinburgh - With film star and animal rights campaigner Brigitte Bardot lending support from the public gallery, judges here yesterday overturned a court order to have Woofie, a three-year-old collie-boxer cross bitch, put down for barking at a postman.

Ms Bardot, who had flown in by private jet to attend the hearing, said she was delighted with the verdict made by two senior judges at the Court of Session. Lord Kirkwood said: "In the light of information made available to this court which was not available before we have decided to allow the appeal and quash the order." Mr Gordon Jackson QC, for Woofie's owners, Terry and Anne Swankie, from Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, said the dog had not harmed anyone and was "a good-natured family pet".
