Irish captain Keith Wood has recorded another notable triumph by claiming the International Rugby Board player of the year award.

Wood, who led his side in the 20-14 victory over England in Dublin last month, took the honour just six days before Ireland attempt to defeat New Zealand at Lansdowne Road.

England stand-off Jonny Wilkinson, Wood's team-mate Brian O'Driscoll and Australian duo George Gregan and George Smith were also nominated.

Australia did pick up the team of the year trophy, after retaining the Tri Nations crown and defeating the Lions during the summer, with now retired coach Rod Macqueen scooping the coach of the year prize.
