A woman was on life support in Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar, last night after being rescued from her submerged car in a tidal river more than 24 hours earlier.

The woman, who is understood to be a non-national in her mid-30s, working locally, was on her own at about 9.30am on Sunday when her vehicle went over the quay in the seaside village of Newport.

Fire brigade and ambulance personnel were quickly on the scene and brought the driver to firm ground where first aid was administered.

The Opel Corsa car which the woman was driving was submerged as it was high tide at the time but was taken from the water later.

Gardaí in Westport 098-25555 are appealing for witnesses to the incident in order to gain a fuller picture of what happened.
