A woman was in a serious condition in hospital last night after she was struck by a Luas travelling inbound on the Red Line at the platform at the Blackhorse tram stop in Dublin shortly after 8pm.

The woman, in her 30s, was struck by the tram at about 8.10pm and subsequently removed to St James’s Hospital, where her condition was said to be serious.

A spokeswoman for Veolia Transport, the company which operates the Luas, said the company would be carrying out an investigation into the incident and had contacted the Railway Safety Commission and Rail Accident Investigative unit.

Gardaí are carrying out their own investigation.
