An inquest in Galway heard yesterday that a woman spent more than six months in a coma after she choked on a piece of sausage.
Ms Mary Fahy (56) of St James's Road, Mervue, died at University College Hospital, Galway, on January 2nd this year.
The inquest heard that Mrs Fahy collapsed and turned blue while eating on June 15th last year. She suffered a cardiac arrest and was unconscious on admission to the hospital. A portion of meat was removed from her air passage and respiration resumed but she remained in a coma. She stayed in a vegetative state for 6 1/2 months and developed Crohn's Disease, the inquest heard.
The coroner, Dr Ciaran MacLoughlin, returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence.
