A witness in the Josie Dwyer manslaughter trial has admitted lying to gardai about her whereabouts on the night of the killing.

Ms Karen Kennedy said she told gardai in two written statements that she was in Tallaght.

"I didn't want to see myself in the picture," she told Dublin Circuit Criminal Court yesterday.

Ms Kennedy also said she saw a man "going mincemeat" on Mr Dwyer while a gang of at least 15 men beat and kicked him as he lay on the ground. "It was horrible."

Four men, Mr Hugh Byrne (33), of Dolphin House; Mr Mark Cooke (25), of Dolphin House; Mr John Fitzpatrick (35), of Fatima Mansions; and Mr William Kenny (55), of St Anthony's Road, all Rialto, deny the manslaughter of Mr Dwyer in Basin Lane, Dublin, on May 14th, 1996. They also deny assault on Mr Alan Byrne and violent disorder on the same date. The prosecution alleges that Mr Dwyer, a heroin addict, was beaten to death after an anti-drugs meeting in Dolphin's Barn. Ms Kennedy also claimed she saw Mr Fitzpatrick carrying a hammer while Mr Dwyer and Mr Alan Byrne fought a group of men.

Ms Linda Morrissey also told the court she had lied about the incident in a statement.

She had said she was at the top of Basin Lane when she saw a group of men attacking another man "like a pack of wolves". She identified some of the men and said they were kicking the man as he lay on the ground.

In direct evidence she said she invented the story because she felt under pressure in the Garda station, and reports of Mr Dwyer's death were "all over the newspapers". The trial continues before Judge Dominic Lynch.
