The water supply to several parts of Co Wicklow has been turned off due to a burst main at Newtownmountkennedy.

Dublin City Council and Wicklow County Council advised householoders that the main water supply will remain off for a minimum of 24 hours while engineers work to identify the location of the leak and carry out repairs.

The areas affected include Kilpedder, Newtown, Newcastle, Kilcoole, Greystones, Delgany and Bray. The councils warned the disruption may continue unitl Thursday and beyond.

Bray County Council said most areas in the town are served by a reservoir which has at least 12 hours storage and said if consumers co-operate by using water sparingly, disruption would be minimal. It also warned storing excessive amounts of water is counterproductive and will cause the water supply to run out

Elsewhere, Dublin City Council said the rationing of water supplies in a number of areas of the city will continue for at least another week.

A spokeswoman said pressure had been increased slightly to provide for the detection of leaks. However, she said water tankers would continue to be a feature of the distribution short-term.

A list of the worst hit areas and the locations of water tankers is being regularly updated on the council’s website at www.dublincity.ie.

The council also warned that “bogus callers” were using the current disruption to water supplies to gain access to houses. It advised householders that council members will always carry and produce identification.

It also warned that if asked to check the flow of water at the taps, householders should close the door fully before doing so.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said water had been restored to several areas after remedial work on leaks over the weekend. However, they warned “leak detection and repairs” continued across the county and a number of households will continue to have water supply problems.

Night water supply will continue to be restricted in over the coming week, and some areas will also experience daytime disruption, they said.

Every effort is being made to rectify the situation and tankers remain on stand-by to distribute water today in the Killiney and Dalkey areas, they said.

While water supplies continue to improve in many counties, water will continue to be cut off at night in many areas.
